OLPC celebrates the Year of the Dragon! 恭喜發財！

恭喜發財！ (Kung hey fat choi!) Last Friday, we gathered 16 OLPC supporters for one simple mission: assemble an XO dragon at different spots of Hong Kong to celebrate Chinese New Year. Between us all, we managed to collect 13 laptops plus a few tidbits (including some pens, plastic cups, stress balls, hanging clips and bananas!), and the only limit was our imagination, of course.

The evening started off with a warm-up run at Western Market in Sheung Wan. As with any team project, our work evolved from a quick brainstorming session to delegation by different body parts, and our first dragon -- pictured above -- was born within minutes. If you look closely, we actually used some of the batteries as legs! This is the kind of "out of the box" thinking that we aim to promote to children everywhere.

After a second run to improve our efficiency, it was time to hop onto the tram. Read on to see how our tour went.

There was a very good reason for why we started at Western Market: it was where the tram line started, which meant we could all secure seats on the top floor! Seeing that there weren't too many passengers on board to begin with, we decided to summon our XO dragon before things got busy. But even without the dragon out in its full glory, we were glad that fellow passengers were intrigued by our laptops. Ah, the curiosity in us all.

Before long, our tram brought us to our first destination: the Hong Kong Central Library. While the building was closed, it was conveniently located opposite the bustling Chinese New Year market in Victoria Park, so it wasn't surprising to see many spectators gathering around us while we reassembled our dragon. In fact, we're very grateful that the police let us use the nearby stairs afterwards for maximum exposure -- we even had fans asking for photos to be taken with the dragon!

The night was young, but the next stop we headed to was a lot quieter. We took the westbound tram back to HSBC's headquarter and only saw the remaining folks at the Occupy Central base camp. Luckily, there were some lions available to keep our dragon company. May the two creatures bring courage, energy and wisdom to children all over the world!

The temperature dropped very quickly at that point, so we decided to make two more stops before wrapping up -- we "walked" our XO dragon to the old Legislative Council Building and a nearby fountain for a quick photo shoot.

We just about managed this shot below before a security guard walked towards us. Pretty sure he would have been fine with our little event, anyway. :)

November 17 - 20, Sichuan Deployment

OLPC APAC has once again returned to Sichuan for another deployment. This time volunteers from Hong Kong and in concert with local Sichuanese volunteers descended on Jintang County just 28 kilometers away from Chengdu for the deployment.

Our mission: to conduct XO training workshops, install school servers plus WiFi access points, and to install new localization patches on 1000 units of XO laptops. These laptops will be deployed with three area primary schools; Anbang Primary School, Experimental Primary School and Xixian Primary School.

Xixian Primary School will serve as our key pilot school as XO laptops will be provided to every student between the grades of two to five. While at the other two schools, XO laptops will only be distributed to fourth graders.

For the next 3 days, we will be calling Anbang Primary School our new home as we toil late into the night prepping 1000 units of XO laptops and conducting morning training workshops for both the teachers and children. The students at Anbang were extremely cheerful and courteous as they greeted the volunteers with a big smile and called us "uncle" or "aunt". Needless to say, the ladies weren't too fond of being called "aunts" all day long and would rather be greeted with a "younger" title.

Day 3.... meeting the kids!!! The morning at Anbang Primary was the coldest morning yet but our spirits are high and we're all excited for we know today is a day like no other. After flying hundreds of miles on a red eye flight and working like slaves for the past 2 days, it all comes down to today. One might say today is defining moment of the entire trip. Today we will be hosting a training workshop for around 60 students from the three area schools. Throughout the training workshop, the kids were fully engaged with the various learning activities in the XO laptops. At one point, we even invited two kids up to the stage to share their learning experiences and had them teach the rest of the class on completing certain tasks with the XO laptops. While that is going on, the tech team visited the other 2 schools to config and install the school servers and the WiFi access points. Being able to witness first hand the kids having fun exploring and learning on the XO laptops while collaborating with their friends on what they have learned made the red eye flight and the hard work from the previous 2 days all worth the while....

重回四川：第三天

終於來到我們最期待的一天！今早我們對住一班來至三間學校的學生代表，有的跟隨家長而來，也有幾位老師來幫忙。眼見一排一排的綠色電腦，小朋友們不禁笑起來。有的更大叫一聲：「哇噻！」

]]> 昨天的差不多，只是更加熱鬧吧。首先 Anthony 向大家介紹 XO-1 電腦，然後志願者們幫手分配。

急不及待的樣子，呵呵。

Anthony 和 Tod 介紹 Sugar 的操作介面。Tod 可真厲害，雖然有點頭痛，但是他仍然堅持繼續指導學生們，佩服佩服。

別忘了我們的幕後英雄喔！幾位俊男同時在樓下的課室安裝 XO-1 專用的伺服器。

回到樓上的課室，發現原來學生們都在畫畫。看他們多自豪！

XO-1 有拍照功能，所以我們的學生又多了一台相機。

學生們也無懼挺複雜的 Scratch 活動，造出有趣的貓追鳥動畫。

好可愛喔！

大約三個小時之後我們下課了。由於最後還是會由學校各自分配電腦給學生，所以今天他們要先空手而回了，嗚嗚。當然，這並非事實，皆因這裡有些學生也獲得了一些新技能；特別設計的新工具及平台亦有助增強長進心以及啟發思維。

重回四川：第二天

睡飽之後，今早我們回到金堂縣安邦保險小學校，爭取於下午的培訓班前完成 XO-1 手提電腦升級。由於星期六沒有課堂，校園比昨天平靜得多了，所以 XO-1 的「噹噹」開機聲音就更響亮了。

沒多久後，成都的志願者都到齊了。於是我們都轉移到樓上的課室輪流做了一個簡單的自我介紹 -- 原來當中都有很多電腦精英呢！當然，參與 OLPC 活動的人士不一定需要精通電腦；反而耐心及愛心才是首要的。

志願者們都對 XO-1 抱有好奇心。

自我介紹。

開始分配工作了。Jacky 先向各位解釋 XO-1 的升級程序以及基本操作，然後一小班人去另一所學校安裝無線接取器及 XO-1 專用的伺服器。

志願者們用得很投入喔。

三位俊男抱住機器準備出發到金堂縣栖賢學校。

從安邦到栖賢僅需要大約十五分鐘的車程。

由於栖賢也有十八班初中班，所以校園比安邦大很多，但其實小學的話前者每級只有兩班，而後者則有三至五班。

有些課室的設備比較殘舊。這塊黑板中間有一部份已經剝落。

志願者們忙著解決伺服器連線的問題，因此晚了回去吃牛飯。辛苦了。

有志願者帶同太太及四歲的女兒參與活動。Anthony 即時來教導小朋友用 XO-1 玩音樂，算是為明天的學生培訓熱身吧。

回到安邦小學了。幸好今天的午飯沒有昨天的那麼辣，呵呵。吃飽後我們走到附近的小店買飲料。

下午兩點半我們開始培訓成都的志願者及來至三所學校的老師，為他們準備明天陪伴學生代表們來學習。今天的課程包括摸熟 Sugar 環境、iEnglish 英語學習活動（Sugar 的每個軟件稱為活動）、Tux Paint 畫畫活動、Scratch 動畫設計活動等等，課室變得非常熱鬧。

已經精通電腦的志願者及老師們頓時變成小朋友般從新學習。一台基本的手提電腦已經可以帶出大人的童真呢。

忙了一整天，終於可以去嘗嘗四川的麻辣火鍋了！呵呵，果然名不虛傳 -- 筆者剛到達飯館的時候發現全香港人的那圍枱被辣到一聲不出；反而本地的志願者及老師們都是邊吃邊談，真佩服他們！

就這樣又過了一天。我們抱著一肚辣氣（真得很辣！）回到酒店睡覺，準備明天跟小朋友們見們。

重回四川：第一天

不經不覺，這一次已經是 OLPC Asia 的第四次四川任務，需要在成都把 1,000 台 XO-1 手提電腦分佈到三家大小不同的小學，可以想像到後勤方面會是相當的困難。沒關係，我們來動動腦筋也好呀。

這次行程經由深圳寶安國際機場飛到成都，從香港（巴士）到第一晚的酒店全程大約為六小時。剛上小巴到酒店的時候我們十六人還是精神奕奕的 -- 有的拍照，有的聊天，有的趕緊修復 XO-1 的軟件小毛病（在車上調試程式碼真不簡單）。不過到踏入房間的時候都已經一點四十分了，難怪今天早餐出現了幾隻熊貓。

幸好，稍後金堂縣安邦保險小學校舉辦的捐贈儀式打醒了我們。眼見數百名活潑的小學生們有秩序地站在操場上以示歡迎，我們頓時變得喜不自禁。只是儀式之後不斷有學生向我們大呼「叔叔好！」、「阿姨好！」，有點不習慣，呵呵（我們大都才二十多歲呢）。

其實安邦小學就是三家學校的其中之一，該校亦提供了大量空間讓我們進行 XO-1 的漫長升級工程，以準備明天的本地義工培訓及分配。在外面品嘗過豐盛的辛辣川菜後，我們回到學校為一批一批的 XO-1 進行軟件更新。

到了差不多九點的時候我們搞好了 770 台電腦，進度不錯，所以就先回酒店休息了。明天繼續努力，看看小朋友們對 XO-1 會有什麼反應吧！

四川省都江堰浦陽小學 (09年11月)

11月12﹣15日，是每童一電腦義工團第3次去四川省都江椻浦陽小學，最初2次是把總共1000部XO送到四川省都江椻浦陽小學，而這一次是更新XO系統，另加入一些新的程式，和他們師生進行培訓，教導他們如何使用XO，及使用XO作教育用途，並幫助浦陽小學建立無線網絡系統，學校伺服器，以及建立電郵及作品分享平台。

本人之前2次因回鄉證過期或沒有年假關係，沒有上去幫手，而這次剛好在轉工的空檔中，於是抽空去幫手。在四川大地震災後的都江椻，四周都在重建當中，浦陽小學當時在地震中損毀，而現在浦陽小學已搬到一座新的校舍，校舍雖然新，但我覺得設備仍很簡陋，雖然已有電腦室，但看來看去，怎看都像是農村學校，不像大城市的學校。

我們一行人，於11日晚到達，12日朝早就到了浦陽小學，在一輪歡迎儀式後，我們就分成2批，一批開始進行更新活動，把1000部XO更新到我們最新的版本，而另一批就開始建立無線網絡系統，學校伺服器，電郵及作品分享平台。

13日全日，我們開始為五百個小孩進行如何使用XO的培訓工作，由於人手嚴重不足，每一位義工要教導50個小孩，而由於技術問題，當時只能有100部XO上網，因此只能用走讀的方法，讓學生學習上網，以及學會使用不同的程式。

14日上午，開始教校內老師如何使用XO，以及利用教學平台作教學用途。

小朋友學習真是非常快，一學就會，而且玩得很好。我教那一班學生又非常有趣，我的普通話不太好，他們會說：老師何解說話那麼奇怪，我們都聽不了。之後他們開始和我說四川話。

有一位同學，自製了一張感謝卡送給我，說非常感謝我們教他們電腦。讓我非常感動。

不丹任務：開幕典禮暨 XO 初體驗

昨天的一片空泥地，一夜之間竟變得綠草如茵、人潮洶湧！

看見這個場面，大家都不禁興奮起來了！

帳幕，是為這次開幕禮所搭建的，很漂亮吧？

上圖中間那位，是 Dasho Kinley Dorji，為不丹皇家政府資訊及通訊部秘書長 (Secretary of the Ministry of Information & Communications of the Royal Government of Bhutan)。他當天穿了全套正式服裝，還身備配劍，簡直威風凜凜！不過他說，劍只是裝飾品，他根本不會舞劍... 演講時，他首先說了一堆不丹語，跟在場旁聽的小孩打個招呼，令快要悶荒的孩子們都為之一振！然後他把手伸進袍裡，我以為他在搔癢，原來他在找他的講稿，就像古裝劇裡的人那樣...

這時，一位醒目的小六生站了出來，他將負責在開幕儀式中領唱。想聽聽他和其他小孩的聲音、感受一下現場氣氛的話，可看看以下的兩個 videos:

雖然開幕禮都是大人在講話，但主角仍應是小朋友！

這裡比城市落後，很多小朋友根本沒有觸摸過電腦。 Anthony 開了一部 XO，示範用 XO 拍照，小朋友立即蜂擁而至！

不要看他們年紀小小，他們不但有禮貌 (甚至害羞)，而且紀律良好，英文也說得不錯！不信的話，看看以下這段 video - tell me, what is your name?

不說你或許不知道，不丹人最大的興趣之一，就是放 BREAK (小息)！

因為常常要放 BREAK，我們原來的日程安排都亂了... 但誰管它！這裡是不丹，就讓我們投入一下，感受這種寫意的不丹人生活吧 =)

這兒的奶茶，重點在奶不是茶，極為香濃，而且真的很好很好喝！

放 BREAK 另一好處是可以跟當地人 "吹水"，認識他們多一點。同行的香港人都應該知道，我很喜歡 "撩" 當地人談天說地 (例如一下飛機，往酒店途中，我已經爭著要坐司機旁的位置...)

回到正題！看 Anthony 多麼落力 "sell" XO！

再看看 Anthony 在開幕禮演講的珍貴片段:

OLPC 得到不丹政府重視，因此這天來了不少當地傳媒。本來當日只打算教當地老師怎樣用 XO，明天或後天才有小朋友的份兒，但在傳媒要求下，我們決定臨時加開一個環節，讓小朋友率先接觸這部為他們而設的 XO!

Anthony 在環節一開始時，便跟小朋友玩了一個緊張刺激的遊戲，名為 "鬥快開 XO"！

結果如何？且看以下片段：

小朋友不但學識了開機，還懂得怎樣利用 XO 拍照、拍 video、玩迷宮、反轉個螢幕當 ebook 用、etc.

參與這環節的都是小六學生，十分聰明，很多 XO 上的操作根本自己摸得透。

除了學生外，老師的培訓也相當重要。只有他們明白 XO 的好處，把 XO 帶進課堂，小朋友的獲益才最大。參與這星期的培訓的老師，來自不丹不同地區的學校，包括一些為特殊兒童而設的 UNICEF 學校，有些老師更徒步走了兩、三天的路才到達這裡，他們的認真，實在令人感動！

但正正因為他們很認真的學習，進度神速，所以 Anthony 教畢 XO 的基本概念和操作後，還剩有一點點的時間。我惟有提早一天教了 XO 的音樂程式。起初我還有些膽怯，但老師們都十分合作，有問有答，氣氛融洽，結果過程相當享受。

課室門外，經常擠滿好奇的小孩子。當時我在想，不知明天會否有機會給他們玩 XO 呢？

不丹任務：抵步第一天!

不丹，我們來了！

這裡的機場很小，貌似一個小寺廟，跑道也很短 (若煞制遲一點便會撞到山似的)，但五臟俱全，連 free wifi 都有。我們這班平日「無得上網太耐會死」的香港人，當然十分興奮，個個狂 check email 同 upload 相去 facebook 啦 ~

呢 set 野勁啦！今次得到 ALTAI 大力支持，送了這套超距離 wifi 天線 (A8 Super WiFi Base Station)，訊號足以覆蓋 1km 的半徑範圍。有了這個，小孩便可以用 XO 電腦上網了。

這天的不丹，天氣近乎完美，十分清爽，帶點微風，有太陽的時候，穿短袖也不成問題。由於位處高原地帶，空氣比較稀薄，不留意身體狀況的話，可能出現高山反應。我們當中便有些人感到心跳加速，呼吸比平時困難。有趣的是，有些當地人根本不知道 "高山反應" 是甚麼一回事，因為他們都十分適應這裡的環境，小孩子都又蹦又跳的！

]]> 我們到酒店放下行李，吃了個午餐，便向試點小學出發。學校的名字叫 Kuzhugchen School，於不丹延布市 (Thimpu) 以外的郊區。上山的路不易走，路邊處處是懸崖，欄杆欠奉。沒有一定的駕車技術 (和膽量)，恐怕也不能順利完成這 45 分鐘的路程啊！（我對我們的司機叔叔是很佩服的，雖然他的話是多了點，哈哈）

沒錯！這便是學校的班房，除了一塊黑板及幾張桌子以外，真是空空如也。我們亦發現，有好些班房甚至連電源也沒有。看來我們未來幾天的工作可多了!

為趕及於天黑前下山，我們都急不及待，把早已運到的 XO 小電腦拿出來，逐一安裝補給程式 (patch)。

與此同時，這三位高手忙著尋找合適的地方，安裝 ALTAI 的超級強力 wifi 天線。

這位小朋友，是校長的其中一個女兒，就讀二年級，懂一點點的英語。她不但對 XO 電腦很好奇，也對我的相機非常有興趣。我乾脆把相機借了給她，且看看她的作品：

最後，我們天黑才離去。

明天一早便是開幕典禮，還有很多東西要準備。雖然大家有點累，雖然回到酒店仍要開會，雖然有很多實際問題需要解決，雖然酒店餐廳效率低（晚飯點菜後要等一小時才有得吃），但大家總是 hee hee ha ha 的，期待快樂的另一天到臨。

OLPC 亞太區第二站：不丹任務

出發之前，朋友都問：不丹？甚麼地方？

我把我知道的，從 wikipedia 裡讀過的，電視裡看過的，都搬出來了 . . . 甚麼印度和西藏之間 / 喜瑪拉亞山山脊上 / 一個小小的國度 / 從前有個靚仔國皇 / 讓了位給他的靚仔兒子 / 人民很窮但快樂指數高企 . . . 更是梁朝偉跟劉嘉玲結婚的地方。香港人一聽到這裡，都會很滿意地點頭表示明白的樣子。其實他們都不太清楚。包括我自己在內。

我是 OLPC (one laptop per child) 新加入的小小義工之一。兩年多前，2007年的一個聖誕節前夕，我捐了一部小小的 XO laptop 給遠方的一個小孩。當時的我，還以為自己很了解這個 project，以為給孩子送電腦就是這個 project 的目標。這趟不丹之行把我這個觀念完全改變過來了 . . .

雖然說這次的不丹任務有當地政府的支持，但出發前還是一步一驚心。先有VISA 問題、後有機票問題、東部地震問題、天氣究竟有沒有如某些網站所說只有 -4 度的疑問、住的酒店究竟確認了沒有、到底我們要去的是哪一所學校、究竟有多少學生參與、不丹各地又有多少老師前來參與、電線拖板夠不夠、班房有多少等等，甚麼都不清楚，問不丹的負責人，他們都好像不著緊！有一個不丹人後來跟我說： "We don't plan here at Bhutan!"

也許這就是他們快樂的秘訣？

Sichuan Trip (2)

7th June, Puyang Primary School. The original campus collapsed during the 512 Earthquake. The current campus is now a cluster of hastily erected temporary classrooms.

It is the last day of school before the summer vacation. On the blackboards are lists of summer homework and assignments. Some parents are anxiously waiting for their child outside the classroom.

The tasks for us OLPC volunteers is twofold -- firstly, to set up the classrooms and XOs, and secondly to hold XO workshops for primary school students.

Originally, we had hoped to use the (wireless) network to apply our patches to the new XOs (mainly Chinese localization) -- and the following are the commands to that effect:

But it turns out the wireless channels were saturated, the network became so slow that we had to use the alternative method of upgrading using USB storage devices. Having around 30 sticks allows for some "fun" like this one made by University of Hong Kong (HKU) students:

Workshop starts after lunch! In our 2 hour workshop, we aim to introduce the children to the XO and its basic functions. One additional hurdle we had to overcome in Chinese deployments was to explain the English on the keyboards. "Erase", "enter" etc., and explaining how to input Chinese characters.

(In a sense Chinese input in the mainland is relatively more simple to explain than the input systems popular in Taiwan or Hong Kong, since the Pinyin romanization system is taught in standard cirriculum in the mainland, whereas the Zhuyin, a non-romantic phonetic system is popular in Taiwan, which requires learning a keymap for using the system for Chinese input, and there is virtually no standard phonetic system in Hong Kong.)

The children were generally excited with their new toy, and kept asking us questions as we taught them how to open the XO, type Chinese characters, and open various XO activities. In fact, most of the time we were overwhelmed with raised hands and questions, and there was a bit of shortage of manpower even with 2-3 volunteers in each of the four classrooms. The workshop session was a bit exhausting, but we were happy for the positive response from the kids.

The children were dismissed after the workshop ended, but we weren't about to go home yet. Although we still have two more workshops sessions the next day, we couldn't just leave the XO's in the classrooms. The classrooms had virtually no security, so we had to pack up the XOs in the classrooms and stash them into a temporary "storeroom". ( It turns out that the "storeroom"'s security was not much better. The security guard actually kicked open the supposedly locked door the next day to retrieve the XOs... )

Sichuan Deployment Trip (1)

[Apologies to those who do not read Chinese, here's the long due journal of the Sichuan deployment trip in English! Enjoy~]

On the morning of 6 June, Hong Kong International Airport.

8 people in our group, volunteers for this OLPC deployment trip. Our destination is for Dujiangyan, Sichuan. Our mission? To give 1000 XO laptops to children in Puyang Primary School, and to hold a few "XO workshops" to provide a bit of basic training for them. We hope that by deploying the laptops before summer vacation, the children will have ample time to get themselves familiar with their new friend during the summer.

The trip lasts for 5 days, so there aren't too many personal items to bring. Yet one of our volunteers, Charles, appeared with huge luggage. "That's the School Server inside", he explained.

The luggage of two other volunteers, Jacky and Henry was quite heavy too. Jacky, as our de-facto-official photographer, stuffed his luggage with expensive-looking gear. Henry, another photography enthusiast, seems to have brought luggage that equaled his body weight. And of course it wasn't just photography gear -- technical accessories such as mice, wireless routers, USB flash drives, etc. were all prepared just in case we needed them.]]>

(Speaking of Anthony, I feel compelled to mention the great efforts he spent in securing the timely delivery of the XOs to the deployment site. For the 1000 XOs we are giving in this deployment, 100 had already arrived a few months ago when we held training workshops for teachers of the school in April. The remaining 900 XOs were shipped to Sichuan in two loads, from Hong Kong and Shanghai respectively. Due to procedural problems in customs and taxes, the cargo was held up, and time was running out. Obviously we cannot do much with 100 XOs in a school of about a thousand students. To deal with the problem, Anthony made about seventy phone calls in one day calling up relevant government departments in Sichuan to get the XOs moving. And they arrived just in time. Whew!)

We took a van from Chengdu Airport to Dujiangyan. Although urban reconstruction masked most of the scars in the 512 Earthquake, occasionally we still saw half-collapsed buildings along the way.

We found our final hotel after a bit of a struggle with other hotels. Two local helpers, who expressed interest in our project, arrived too. We also called up five University of Hong Kong students who happened to be around in Sichuan and was interested in helping out.

After everybody arrived and settled down, we held a short meeting to plan division of tasks and other matters for tomorrow's XO workshop.

When the meeting was over, it was dinner time already. Speaking of dinner, one of our favorite pastimes during the trip was to guess how spicy the food was. Sichuan cuisine is famous for its "ma la", the hot and numbing taste through a combination of chili peppers and Sichuan pepers. One prominent "theory" among us was that, if the dish looks "red" and "spicy", the taste is probably relatively mild, and would be "safe to eat", whereas innocent looking dishes could wreck havoc on our tongues. I personally thought the spiciness was within my tolerance limits, so I never set out to confirm the theory myself. But even then sometimes I'd accidentally ingest a small piece of chili pepper, and when I realize my mistake it would be too late to reach for a glass of water :)

四川之行(四)

六月九日。

都江堰的天氣一直在陰天和下雨之間，令人有種陰晴不定的感覺。記得這幾天晚上下雨比較多，日間倒沒怎麼把我們弄濕。

我們都在想，但願今天也如是。

今天舉行 XO 捐贈儀式，成都、都江堰等相關部門的領導都賞面出席，而地點就在蒲陽小學的露天操場。雖說 XO 有防水功能，但如果要在大雨中舉行儀式，也不免大煞風景了。

幸好，天公造美，既沒下雨，也沒有露出猛烈的陽光。

一開始是各在場的來賓致詞。反正都是不免有點官腔，但聽起來還是有點感動。

然後就是造點排場的場面，好讓我們有點較壯觀的照片。

在蒲陽小學的正事大致完成，我們下午到都江堰遊覽散心。看過了都江堰的古代水利工程----魚嘴、寶瓶口等等，想到這水利工程一直由二千多年前沿用到今天，真是厲害啊。而且，山水景色還不錯呢。

不過，其實我們還有一點兒的工作還未做完，就是昨天剛到的幾百部 XO 還沒有升級。所以行程其實還有點趕急，下午三點就出發回學校繼續進行升級了。

折包裝，開機，插入 USB 記憶體，輸入升級指令...... 這些工序我們在這幾天已練得爛熟，加上流水式作業，兩個小時就替四百幾十部 XO 進行了升級。

大功告成！

(咦！這些 XO 不是今早派發了嗎？其實因為有些 XO 還未升級的關係...早上派發的 XO 最後還是要回收。到六月十二日，孩子們才得把 XO 拿回家。對於這個將陪伴著孩子成長的電腦，待幾天還不算多吧... :)

快黃昏了，我們義工團往成都出發，到著名的寛窄巷吃晚飯。第二天早上，還趁著有點時間，偷閒參觀了杜甫故居，在錦里古街吃了個午飯。然後，就到成都機場搭飛機回香港了。

四川蒲陽小學，是 OLPC 亞太區的第一個大型捐贈項目，而這次四川之行，也給了我們寶貴的經驗。無論是義工們對 OLPC 工作的認識，包括行程安排、舉辦工作坊的經驗，還是我們每一個人自己的體驗和得著，都是無價的。

這只是開始。孩子們拿到了的 XO，能否有效地幫助他們學習和成長？ OLPC 在世界各地的成功例子不少，但也有不少 XO 因為各種原因未能善用而被打進了冷宮。這一千部 XO 和他們的主人日後的命運將是怎樣呢？那我們要拭目以待了。( 當然，我們不是被動的，本來我們計劃在開學後組團回四川跟進孩子們使用 XO 的情況，但因為最近有不丹這個項目[見下]，加上其他原因，就只好暫時擱下了)

而蒲陽小學也只是 OLPC 亞太區的第一個試點。接下來還要有各地的工作。根據計劃，蒲陽小學只是 OLPC 亞太區在四川十間小學中的一個。還有九間小學。而另一邊廂，我們已計畫在九月至十月向不丹捐贈二百部 XO，大致安排定當，只欠東風。

當然，XO 和 OLPC 義工不是憑空變出來的！我們「每童一電腦」計劃真的很需要您的支持！如果您願意出錢，可以到我們的捐款頁，為亞太區的孩子贈送 XO；如果願意出力，又可以報名加入我們的義工行列。當然，能出錢出力就最好啦 :)

我們六月在四川的行程暫時寫到這裡。下集預告，大概是不丹吧！(不過我抽身不得去不了...不知道這次有沒有隨行的義工願意寫遊記呢......)

四川之行(三)

六月八日。

今天繼續進行工作坊，為小四和小五的學生介紹 XO 。先來幾張活動照片：

今天主要的工作和昨天的大致一樣，有了昨天工作坊的經驗，一切大致順利。由於昨天安排了到外面的餐廳午膳令時間有點緊迫，今天我們在學校課室吃午飯。

午飯後，有幾位義工終於「飯氣攻心」，不支「倒下」來個午睡了...

下午再繼續進行工作坊。 (嗯，就按這裡！)

工作坊完結後，我們的工作還未結束呢！第一，還得把課室的 XO 電腦搬回儲藏室。第二，要為餘下還未中文化的 XO 進行升級。由於儲藏室都放滿了 XO 和包裝盒，要把 XO 搬到另一個課室進行升級。為了方便搬運，我們結成人「人鏈」......可能因為平時義工們在香港很少人手搬運大量物品，所以都覺得新奇又好玩呢！

升級的情況：

不過，真正的體力勞動還未開始！之前提及過，這次蒲陽小學的捐贈活動的 XO 電腦將分兩批運來。第一批 450 部 XO，在我們到步時運來了。第二批，也是 450 部 XO，恰巧在這個時候到達。

我們得把 XO 點收，然後搬到儲藏室。我們再架起人鏈，把剛運到的 XO 搬了進去。然後，還要拆封，把包裝和 XO 分別放好，以方便在明天捐贈儀式派發。

今天的工作完成，大家都鬆了一口氣！先來個大合照！

四川之行(二)

六月七日，四川都江堰蒲陽小學。蒲陽小學原來的校舍在 512 地震中塌下了，現在我們現在見到的是一個一個臨時鐵板房間。

今天是學生們暑假前最後一天正式上課。黑板上都列滿了暑假作業的清單。有一些家長們在課室門外等候孩子們下課。

今天我們 OLPC 義工的工作分為兩部份：早上要把課室和 XO 準備好，下午就開始為小三學生們舉辦工作坊。

本來，我們打算用網絡替 XO 進行更新，以下是人手進行網絡更新的步驟：

但由於一個課室有三四十部 XO ，網絡速度就十分緩慢了。後來唯有用 USB 「手指」進行更新 (這個 USB 手指陣勢是由 HKU 學生義工偷閒[/偷懶?]排出來的)：

下午，工作坊就開始了！這個工作坊主要是向孩子門介紹 XO 的基本操作和它的各種能能。孩子們都很踴躍啊！他們一直發問題，讓義工們忙了個不亦樂乎！

我們在這工作坊教導孩子們基本的 XO 操作，包括開關電腦、文字輸入、啟動 XO 的活動 (XO Activities) 等等。希望他們有了基本的操作知識後，可以自己在暑假期間發掘一下 XO 的其他功能！

工作坊完結後，孩子們都歸家了。但 OLPC 的義工們還未能休息。因為每個課室的都有三十至四十部 XO ，而每一部 XO 雖然比一般電腦價錢低，但加起來都價值不菲！由於蒲陽小學還是用臨時的鐵板房做課室，所以要破門而入是輕而易舉的事 (事實上我們第二天回到學校時，保安人員是用踢門的方法開門的....)。為了安全起見，我們還得把在四個課室的 XO 搬回一個臨時的「倉庫課室」，再安排保安人員看守呢！

到這時候，我們第二天的工作才大致完成。別看照片好像很光亮，其實時間已經是傍晚六點了。一來夏天日長，二來四川在中國偏西，日落時間也較遲。(三來陰沉沉的照片不好看，所以我也輕量調整過光暗 :-)
